Embedded System -- A specialized computer system that is part of a larger system or machine. Typically, an embedded system is housed on a single microprocessor board with the programs stored in ROM. Virtually all appliances that have a digital interface (watches, microwaves, VCRs, cars) utilize embedded systems. Some embedded systems include an operating system, but many are so specialized that the entire logic can be implemented as a single program.

VMIC (VME Microsystems International Corporation) (purchased by GE in 2001) specializes in providing embedded computer products for open-architecture buses, including CompactPCI®, VME, PCI, PMC, and PC/104-Plus. VMIC's extensive product line includes Intel®-based single-board computers, data acquisition and control products, and high-speed communications/networking products. As a global supplier for more than 16 years, VMIC provides diversified solutions for the telecommunications, medical, industrial automation, test and measurement, defense/aerospace, semiconductor, and OEM embedded product markets.
